SO… WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?

A Catalyst is a box filled with parts, like a kit. But it comes with challenges, not instructions—all the pieces and components are thoughtfully selected and designed to enable unlimited projects and discoveries related to principles in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

But it’s also a box full of possibilities, a box that sparks wonder, curiosity, and creative innovation. It’s full of things that buzz and fly and whoosh, that can be made and unmade and remade in infinite ways. Things that make kids ask “why?” and “what if?” Things that light up both faces and minds—things that spark something.

The motors, screwdriver, and hardware in the Electric Motors Catalyst are not toy parts.

REAL.

Real tools, real parts, real science, real engineering. Catalysts contain mostly recognizable hardware, tools and materials so that kids easily connect what they see in the Catalyst with the objects in the world around them.

Rubber bands let kids attach whatever they want wherever they want — fast.

FAST.

Think it. Then do it. We’ve designed our Catalysts for rapid prototyping, allowing kids to get started quickly and to test out each new idea with minimal effort. As a result, kids will try, try again until they’ve accomplished their goals.

Kids can touch bare wires, stop wheels with their hands — no problem.  

SAFE.

Safe components enable audacious ideas. Carefully planned cases, voltages and speeds allow for freedom of exploration. Kids can and should explore the possibilities without adult supervision to allow for innovation and critical thinking..

Springs make a super-adjustable, super-fast method for electrical connections.

TWEAKABLE.

Adjustability is more important than precision. Each Catalyst is deliberately designed so that the parts can be easily assembled, disassembled and reassembled in countless ways.

Kids can ransack the junk drawer and play chest for more parts.

OPEN.

Look around – what else can you use? Instead of parts that only work with each other, we’ve purposely designed these so you can incorporate items from other Catalysts, the garage, or the hardware store.

Challenges, not Instructions. Instead of providing step-by-step instructions to build specific projects, we provide basic fundamentals about how the parts work together, then challenge kids to build their own creations.

Kids can collaborate with other young tinkerers online.

Join the community of Tinkerers! Get together for a Tinkerthon in your neighborhood, or, once we’re up and running, kids can join our online community where they can share ideas, learn from what others are doing, and provide support.
